Communion Ware

My communion ware is designed to be simple and functional, to subtly enhance rather than distract from the significance of the rite. Each set is made individually using a potter's wheel, not a mold, so sizes and shapes vary. The pieces pictured here are samples, not standard lines of ware. Each set that I make is unique.

Generally, my full-size patens are 9-10" in diameter, large enough for a real loaf of bread. Chalices are approximately 7-9" high, with a 4-5" diameter open bowl that works well when the wine is shared by intinction (dipping). I also make slightly smaller sets, suitable for retreat groups, or for those churches that prefer a more compact communion set. Retreat size chalices are typically 6-7" high and patens are 7-8" diameter. I also make a personal or travel size set, with chalice about 3-4" high and paten 3-4" in diameter. Additional items, such as pitchers, bowls, oil lamps, etc, are also available on request.

Communion ware is available by special order, though I often have a few sets in stock at any given time. See notes below. A standard set of chalice and paten is $60 ($50 for retreat-size sets), plus shipping (USPS Priority Mail) and handling ($5 per set) charges; additional charges may apply for special requests.

These pots have a single glaze, which goes from green where it is applied thinly to blue in thicker areas. It is not possible to fully control the proportions of blue and green, so they tend to vary.
