The Empty Bowls Project

Empty Bowls is an international project to fight hunger. The basic idea for Empty Bowls is simple. Participants create ceramic bowls, then serve a simple meal of soup and bread. Guests choose a bowl to use that day and to keep as a reminder that there are always empty bowls in the world. In exchange for the meal and the bowl, guests give a suggested minimum donation of ten dollars. The meal's sponsors and/or guests choose a hunger-fighting organization to receive the money collected.

Empty Bowls began in Michigan in the spring of 1991. Due to the tremendous success of the project and the work of literally thousands of participants, Empty Bowls projects now occur throughout the year, raising millions of dollars to fight hunger.

Here in the Triangle area of North Carolina, the Triangle Potters Guild has sponsored Empty Bowls events in partnership with Community United Church of Christ in Raleigh and Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church in Fuquay-Varina.

In March 2001, we sponsored Just One Bowl, an Empty Bowls event that showcases bowls from potters all over North and South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and beyond! The event was held during the National Conference of Educators in the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina. Proceeds of over $15,000 went to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Charlotte.
